Delta Flight Narrowly Avoids Collision With Jet at Reagan National Airport

A Delta passenger plane nearly had a dangerous encounter with a U.S. Air Force aircraft close to Reagan National Airport , merely moments after departing.

The Delta aircraft, carrying 137 individuals, was en route to Minneapolis-St. Paul shortly after takeoff. Minnesota when it got an alert about a nearby aircraft.

Alerts sounded within the cockpit of the commercial airplane because the T-38 jet came too near.

According to tracking information provided by FlightRadar 24, the aircraft surpassed the Delta flight and the airport at a speed greater than 350 miles per hour.

As stated by the Federal Aviation Administration, the military aircraft was among three other jets in the vicinity for a flyover event at Arlington National Cemetery.

In audio recordings from air traffic control conversations available through LiveATC.net, a Delta pilot is overheard asking, "Was there really an airplane approximately 500 feet beneath us?"

An air traffic controller replies: 'Confirmed.'

The close call happened just south of the airport and close to the spot where an American Airlines jet crashed into an Army helicopter in January, resulting in 67 fatalities .

On Friday, the FAA issued a statement saying they will look into the close call.

The Delta plane got an alarm indicating that another aircraft was close by. According to reports, air traffic controllers provided corrective directions to both planes involved.

Delta stated in a release: "The safety of our customers and staff is paramount."
