Nairobi The Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) has dismissed claims suggesting there were intentions to topple President William Ruto amid the Gen Z protest activities.
On Monday, March 17, the Ministry of Defence released a forceful statement addressing an article published by Media Group. The piece suggested that ODM party leader Raila Odinga prevented a military coup against Ruto.
On Monday, March 17, the Ministry of Defence released a robust statement condemning Daily Nation for publishing an article alleging that ex-Prime Minister Raila Odinga thwarted a military coup aimed at President William Ruto.
The statement released by Defence Cabinet Secretary Soipan Tuya refuted the report featured in Sunday Nation under the title "Raila: I Prevented a Military Coup Against Ruto," along with an additional piece in Taifa Jumapili called "How Raila thwarted a Revolution Against Ruto."
The KDF described the article as false and misleading, also stating that the organization maintains a neutral stance on political issues.
The ministry firmly asserts that the assertions made in the newspaper pieces are untrue, groundless, unsubstantiated, deceptive, and even irresponsible. The KDF is an accomplished and neutral organization dedicated to maintaining the utmost levels of honesty, order, and national service,” stated the KDF.
KDF vowed its steadfast allegiance to Ruto, who holds the position of Commander-In-Chief, emphasizing that its role is to protect the welfare of Kenya.
"The KDF continues to remain steadfast in its allegiance to the Commander-in-Chief and its commitment to protecting the safety and welfare of Kenya and its citizens, unaffected by politics or factional interests," they further stated.
The KDF criticized Nation Media Group, alleging they were prioritizing sensational coverage to boost their reader base rather than maintaining professional standards.
The article published by Nation Media Group, which was based on unchecked assertions from an anonymous source, is deemed both irresponsible and unpatriotic. It serves as a prime instance of sensationalist journalism designed to boost readership instead of maintaining ethical standards in reporting, they further noted.
